About Bad Breath
Medically known as halitosis, bad breath plagues countless men and women at some point in their life. Our Long Beach dentists at Emigh Dental Care understand how embarrassing this issue can be, which is why we offer a variety of treatments to alleviate bad breath. Temporal or chronic bad breath can be caused by a lack of proper dental hygiene, dry mouth, hunger, or food. Tooth decay and gum disease are also common contributing factors as well. Our practice will perform a thorough exam to determine the leading cause of the halitosis and recommend the most ideal treatment for everyone. However, the first step in bad breath therapy is often to undergo a professional dental cleaning from one of our talented hygienists. Call our Long Beach, CA office today to schedule an appointment so we can provide the proper steps to restore fresh breath.
Plaque and Tartar
A leading cause of poor dental hygiene is plaque and tartar buildup, which are great contributors to bad breath. Plaque is a bacterial film that sticks to and covers the teeth. When it's not removed by routine brushing, or if there is trailing residue left behind after brushing, plaque often turns into tartar. Unfortunately, tartar is very difficult to remove, as it's a hardened substance that often clings to the base of the teeth. Tartar buildup can lead to gum disease like gingivitis or periodontitis.
"My family and I have been going to Emigh Dental Care for years. EVERYONE is very courteous, helpful, and professional. All their equipment is state of the art. I have had terrific Dr. Bob and Dr. Pat as my dentists. My son schedules his appointments with Dr. Todd -- who he thinks is great! Yesterday I was introduced to Dr. Le. She is a wonderful addition to the Team!! I can't say enough about my super hygienist, Andrea! Emigh Dental Care is the whole package!!!!"- A.D. / Yelp / Apr 25, 2018
"Best dentists we have ever had. Our whole family goes there. My 7 year old daughter was petrified of the dentist after a bad experience with another dentist. We switched to the Dr. Emighs and now she is 9 years old and looks forward to going. Tammy is her favorite, but Jade and everyone is fantastic!!"- T.M. / Yelp / Apr 24, 2018
"Off the corner of Atherton and Bellflower. There is plenty of parking and site seeing! Super clean with the proper amenities for before and after you're visit. Friendly greeting staff and handsome Dentist. Beautiful and friendly hygienist. I give this place a 100%. I can't to check out their Los Alamitos location! ^_^ Seasons greetings Emigh family!"- M.E. / Yelp / Dec 07, 2016
"Broke a veneer recently & made an appt. @ Emigh Dental based on all the positive reviews - the reviews don't lie - this office is great & Dr. Todd is just the best! Ended up having him replace all 6 of my prior veneers + do 2 more. The difference between my 'old' (if 7 years is old) & new veneers is like night & day! Huge relief to have found such a talented dentist - HIGHLY recommended!"- J.L. / Yelp / Apr 21, 2018
"Been coming here for 40 years. Excellent care, Staff are always welcoming with smiles. It's not just a dental office , it's like visiting family . Not only has my family had the pleasure of being cared for my Dr. Robert Emigh, now we have the pleasure of being cared for by his two sons Dr. Pat and Dr. Todd to carry on the family tradition. What a wonderful blessing they all are, to all of us to take such good care of us. You can always get an emergency appointment and get in immediately to be cared for. Thank you for continuous Service."- D.P. / Yelp / Apr 19, 2018
What to Expect
Once a full dental exam has been completed, our dentists will determine the next step in treatment. Typically, patients will first receive a thorough dental cleaning to remove any plaque or tartar buildup. The removal of sticky plaque and hardened tartar will help to significantly improve the bad breath. However, if a more serious issue such as tooth decay is detected, an additional appointment may be necessary for an extraction.
Proper dental hygiene is key to maintaining fresh breath. Therefore, flossing and brushing the teeth regularly, especially after meals is essential. Routine dental cleanings will also further a patient's oral health and promote clean breath as well. Our dentists will be able to show specific brushing techniques that will assist patients in their fight against bad breath and may provide them with a specific type of mouthwash or toothpaste. If bad breath continues, patients may need to visit their primary physician to rule out other health problems such as acid reflux or gastrointestinal issues which may be contributing to the chronic bad breath.
