About Bone Grafting

If a mature tooth is lost, it should be replaced immediately with a dental implant or bridge. This dental restoration will help to maintain the structure and function of the tooth as well as prevent the connection between the gum tissue and jawbone from being lost. Unfortunately, sometimes dental restoration is delayed for years, which also results in the deterioration of essential tissue. Thankfully, modern surgical procedures like bone grafting enables our dentists at Emigh Dental Care to restore dental strength and support. This process will provide necessary support to the jawbone, which will enable dental implants to be placed. If patients are in need of a bone graft for dental restoration, we encourage them to call our Long Beach, CA practice today to schedule an appointment. Our practice offers several techniques and bone grafting materials to produce the best results possible.

What To Expect

Typically, bone grafting is performed in two office visits and under oral-conscious sedation. The length of the procedure varies from patient to patient depending on the number of grafts needed and materials used. However, during the initial exam, our dentists will be able to discuss the entire process in detail. During the first visit, the decided method and materials will be used to place the bone graft(s). Once the bone graft has been attached to the natural bone and healed, patients will return for their second visit, which will involve placement of the dental implant.

Treatment Aftercare

With any surgical procedure, it's important to have proper expectations; therefore, patients should expect mild swelling or soreness after their bone grafting surgery. However, these symptoms should subside within 3 – 5 days and discomfort can be eased with an ice pack. Since bone grafting is a two-part procedure, it's important to follow all aftercare instructions provided by our office. All post-treatment instructions are designed to ensure proper healing for the dental implant procedure. Once the implants are placed, swelling and soreness is likely to reoccur, subsiding within a few days. Rinsing with salt water for the first week after implant placement will greatly assist in keeping the surgical site(s) clean.
