About Periodontal Exams
Periodontitis is a severe form of gum disease that is caused by significant tartar buildup underneath the gums. When left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to infection and tooth decay. There are various surgical and nonsurgical periodontal treatments available at Emigh Dental Care, but prior to any treatment, our dentists will perform a thorough dental exam. Routine dental exams and proper dental hygiene are key in preventing periodontal disease and allows for early detection. If patients are in need of a periodontal exam, they can call our Long Beach, CA office today.
Periodontitis is an extreme form of gum disease and should be treated as soon as possible to prevent additional damage such as the spreading of bacteria and infection. Periodontitis is caused by plaque buildup, which typically causes inflammation of the gums. Other symptoms may include pus between the gums or teeth, bad breath, sensitive gums, and bleeding of the gums.
"The front staff at Emigh Dental Care is very friendly and welcoming. There's even water and apple juice while you wait. The waiting room is open and comfy! There's also ample parking in the parking structure! I had my first examination with Dr. Reel today. She was warm, open and friendly! Freddy, the DA escorted me back to the exam room and explained everything thoroughly. I did share that I was worried about my teeth because I haven't had dental care in about 3 years (no dental insurance). After 3 years with no dental care, I have just 1 cavity. After seeing Dr. Reel, Freddy took me to see hygienist, Tammy. Like Dr. Reel, Tammy was warm and friendly. She explained all the things that were to come for my cleaning and the importance of flossing. On 9/17 my 2 year old son and husband saw Dr. Todd. Dr. Todd thoroughly answered all our questions re: jaw surgery for my husband and referred him to an orthodontist. Although my 2 year old son didn't cooperate by opening his mouth, Dr. Todd was able to entertain and make my son feel comfortable. Maybe next time, Dr. Todd will get to take a look at my son's teeth. I look forward to getting my cavity fixed and my next cleaning. Thanks Emigh Dental Care!"- N.S. / Yelp / Sep 21, 2018

"This place truly knows the meaning of customer service, I'm very impressed by the professionalism of the staff. I'm a new client and had to have a filling replaced that had fallen out of one of my back molars. I had an issue at my first visit, the first time they tried to refill it (it took two tries in the office) and then it fell out again, about an hour after I got home. When I came back to get it refilled again, I was not comfortable having the same dentist working on it because she had trouble getting it right the first time. I asked to see someone else. When I came back I was taken care of by Dr. Todd. He was very pleasant and made me feel at ease as soon as I arrived. He's an extremely caring person and more than qualified to fix this hard to fill filling. He not only fixed my tooth but he reassured me that the other dentist was also more than qualified to help me, but that he wanted to make sure I felt comfortable with the service I received. I absolutely love this place and how they treated me, they never made me feel weird for asking for another dentist to fix the issue. If you are searching for excellent dentists who provide impeccable care in a clean and friendly environment with a staff that really values the concept of customer service, I highly recommend the good people at Emigh Dental Care. I like them so much that I referred my fiancé to them too. Try Emigh Dental Care, you will not be disappointed."- S.V. / Yelp / Sep 13, 2018
What to Expect
Periodontal disease affects 75% of adults and can range from mild to severe. Our practice offers a wide array of treatment options to help ensure that each patient receives the proper care. One of the more common forms of treatment used is a nonsurgical procedure known as scaling and root planning. Scaling removes tarter and plaque from the area below the gum line while root planning creates a smoother root and gum surface. Antibiotics may also be used to help alleviate pain and inflammation. Surgical procedures for more severe forms of periodontal disease include gum graft surgery, laser gum surgery, regenerative procedures, and pocket reduction procedures.
It is important to maintain healthy dental care practices to help prevent periodontal disease. This means creating or continuing a good oral hygiene routine as well as implementing suggestions given by our dentists. Our dentists may suggest scheduling routine, annual check-ups and examinations as well as bi-annual cleanings. Patients should also implement common oral care practices into their routines such as flossing, brushing twice a day, and using mouthwash.
