When left untreated, plaque can harden and turn into tartar, which often buildups around the base of the teeth or gums. If tartar is not removed, it can lead to gum disease such as gingivitis or periodontitis. This is why our family dental practice offers scaling and root planing, which is a deep cleaning of the teeth and gums. This process will remove plaque and tartar buildup to restore healthy gums and teeth. If patients are in need of a scaling and root planing procedure, they can call our Long Beach dentists at Emigh Dental Care today to reduce their risk of serious gum disease developing.
"My family and I have been going to Emigh Dental Care for years. EVERYONE is very courteous, helpful, and professional. All their equipment is state of the art. I have had terrific Dr. Bob and Dr. Pat as my dentists. My son schedules his appointments with Dr. Todd -- who he thinks is great! Yesterday I was introduced to Dr. Le. She is a wonderful addition to the Team!! I can't say enough about my super hygienist, Andrea! Emigh Dental Care is the whole package!!!!"- A.D. / Yelp / Apr 25, 2018
"Best dentists we have ever had. Our whole family goes there. My 7 year old daughter was petrified of the dentist after a bad experience with another dentist. We switched to the Dr. Emighs and now she is 9 years old and looks forward to going. Tammy is her favorite, but Jade and everyone is fantastic!!"- T.M. / Yelp / Apr 24, 2018
"Off the corner of Atherton and Bellflower. There is plenty of parking and site seeing! Super clean with the proper amenities for before and after you're visit. Friendly greeting staff and handsome Dentist. Beautiful and friendly hygienist. I give this place a 100%. I can't to check out their Los Alamitos location! ^_^ Seasons greetings Emigh family!"- M.E. / Yelp / Dec 07, 2016
"Broke a veneer recently & made an appt. @ Emigh Dental based on all the positive reviews - the reviews don't lie - this office is great & Dr. Todd is just the best! Ended up having him replace all 6 of my prior veneers + do 2 more. The difference between my 'old' (if 7 years is old) & new veneers is like night & day! Huge relief to have found such a talented dentist - HIGHLY recommended!"- J.L. / Yelp / Apr 21, 2018
"Been coming here for 40 years. Excellent care, Staff are always welcoming with smiles. It's not just a dental office , it's like visiting family . Not only has my family had the pleasure of being cared for my Dr. Robert Emigh, now we have the pleasure of being cared for by his two sons Dr. Pat and Dr. Todd to carry on the family tradition. What a wonderful blessing they all are, to all of us to take such good care of us. You can always get an emergency appointment and get in immediately to be cared for. Thank you for continuous Service."- D.P. / Yelp / Apr 19, 2018
What to Expect
Scaling and root planing is performed in our office with local anesthesia on the areas being treated and/or sedation to help patients remain calm and comfortable. Our dentist begins by using a manual scaling tool or an ultrasonic cleaner to reach all areas of the gum pocket and remove the plaque and tartar that has built up. Once the gum pocket is cleaned, our dentists will smooth or plane the surface of the tooth to minimize areas where plaque and tartar can become trapped. Once the gum pockets are clean and smooth, they can begin to heal and reattach properly to the tooth root.
After the scaling and root planing treatment, patients might have some inflammation or bleeding of the gums, but this should only last for a few days. Patients should continue or start a daily oral health care routine that includes brushing at least twice a day, flossing, and following any special instructions by our dentists. Patients should return in 2 – 4 months to have their gums re-checked to ensure proper health. A second treatment may be needed to fully restore the gums or our dentists may refer patients to a periodontist for special treatment.
