About Gum Recontouring
The contour of the gums can greatly affect the shape and overall symmetry of a patient's teeth. This is why, at Emigh Dental Care, we offer gum recontouring to improve disproportionate gums. Often referred to as periodontal plastic surgery or gum sculpting, this procedure utilizes modern laser technology to gently and effectively alter the shape of the patient's gums, shaping down the excess gum tissue in the case of having overly large gums that make the teeth appear smaller. Typically, this procedure is performed for cosmetic reasons, but in some cases, it may be necessary to improve medical issues such as gum disease. If patients are interested in learning more about how this procedure can help them, they are invitied to call our Long Beach, CA, office today.

"I cannot say enough GREAT things about Dr. Pat and the staff at Emigh Dental. I’ve had bad experiences in the past where dentists are not very personable and/or shame you for what you haven’t done or what you need to do. You won’t get that here. They explain everything and it’s your call in the end. I’ve needed an implant for a few years but was too scared and wanted to hang on to my loose tooth (?!) as long as I could. I finally had to face up to the procedure and started the process today. Dr. Pat extracted two teeth (my other one was loose as well), inserted the post, gave me my “flipper” and I was on my way until my follow up appointment. But...not until I cried in the chair after… More"- K.Q. / Facebook / Jan 29, 2021
"I would like to thanks all doctors, nurses, and workers in this dental office for the great care they are doing. They are all marvelous people. I remember when I came here eight years ago to get my teeth fixed. Since then, when I go to any dental office, they get amazed and ask me where and who did the arranging on my teeth. I am planning to arrange an appointment with them when I come back to visit the state again for a check-up. Syhan, Thanks!"- A.A. / Google / Sep 03, 2020

What to Expect
Before the procedure, our dentists will use a local anesthesia to numb the areas being treated. Other sedation options may be added depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient's anxiety level. Once patients are prepped, our dentists will fix an uneven gum line or gummy smile by removing the excess gum tissue as needed and then sculpting the gum line to look natural and even, sometimes using a borrowed gum graft from the roof of the patient's mouth if necessary.
After a gum recontouring procedure, patients will feel some discomfort and swelling. Gum recontouring generally only takes one day for recovery, and patients are advised to consume soft food and liquids for several days. Patients should contact our office immediately if they have an allergic reaction or if they have discomfort and swelling for more than 48 hours after their procedure.
